Does Lightning Delay Flights?

Last updated on April 24, 2023

Yes, lightning storms can delay flights. When lightning is detected in the vicinity of an airport, controllers may delay aircraft from taking off or landing until the weather improves. Aircraft in flight may also need to be diverted to an alternate airport or held at an altitude safe from the storm until it passes.
