What weather causes flight delays?

Last updated on April 24, 2023

Weather can cause flight delays. Freezing temperatures can disrupt aircraft engines, snow and ice can cause dangerous runways, strong winds can be difficult to navigate and heavy rain can reduce visibility. During thunderstorms, air traffic controllers may temporarily divert flights away from the storm’s path. Low pressure systems can create turbulence, which can cause safety concerns for both passengers and the aircraft. Foggy conditions can reduce visibility to unsafe levels, causing delays and cancellations.
