- What Wind Speed Will Delay Flights?
The speed of wind needed to delay or cancel flights will vary depending on the size of aircraft, operating conditions, and the airline's internal policies. However, a rough guideline is that flights may be delayed or cancelled when wind is expected to exceed 15 to 20 knots (17 to 23 miles per hour). Stronger wind gusts may also require delays, particularly if they are inconsistent or unexpected.
