Why would a flight be diverted?

Last updated on April 24, 2023

Flights can be diverted for a variety of reasons, such as bad weather, air traffic control restrictions, technical issues, or medical emergencies on board. In some cases, authorities may choose to divert the flight for security or safety concerns. Bad weather conditions may force the airline to reroute the plane to an airport that is at a lower elevation and therefore not affected by the weather. Technical issues may require emergency maintenance or repairs at an alternate airport. All diversions must be approved by air traffic control to ensure the safety of the flight.
