What is a runway delay?

Last updated on April 24, 2023

A runway delay is an interruption of a scheduled flight caused by air traffic control, weather, mechanical problems or overcrowding on the runway. The length of the delay depends on the cause, but in general it can range from a few minutes to over an hour. The most common delays occur due to weather conditions, such as heavy rain, snow, high winds, or low visibility. In these cases, an alternate route may be necessary to avoid hazardous conditions.
