Why do flights get diverted?

Last updated on April 24, 2023

Flights can get diverted for a variety of reasons, including technical issues and weather-related safety concerns. When a flight encounters unexpected mechanical problems, such as an engine issue or malfunctioning equipment, the flight may be diverted to a different airport. Similarly, if severe weather is a threat the flight may be forced to land, or the destination airport may be closed. Furthermore, if on-board medical emergencies arise, the pilot may need to divert to a more suitable airport to ensure the patient receives prompt medical attention.
