What is causing flight delays?

Last updated on April 24, 2023

Flight delays can be caused by several factors, including bad weather, crowded airports, mechanical issues, and air traffic control issues. Bad weather, including high winds, cloud cover, and low visibility, can reduce the efficiency of airspace and prevent planes from taking off. At busy airports, hundreds of flights take off and land each day, so delays can result from too many planes competing for a limited amount of airspace and runways. Mechanical issues can occur when a plane does not work properly, requiring repairs or replacement. Air traffic control issues might be the result of an inability to safely accommodate a large volume of planes.
