What Wind Speed Causes Flight Delays?

Last updated on April 24, 2023

A strong wind speed of 30 knots or greater can cause flight delays. Wind speed can create turbulence which is unsafe for the aircraft and passengers, and make it difficult for pilots to control the plane. Crosswinds blowing perpendicular to the runway can also cause delays if they exceed certain thresholds, as they prevent the aircraft from following the desired glide path. Even if wind speed is not very high, significant gusts or sudden changes in wind direction can delay a flight.
