Why are there so many flight delays?

Last updated on April 24, 2023

There are many potential causes of flight delays, such as inclement weather, airport or air traffic control congestion, mechanical issues, crew scheduling, and limited airspace. Poor weather conditions can affect visibility, making it difficult for planes to safely take off or land. Airport congestion can result in planes not being able to access the runways on time. Furthermore, mechanical problems can cause unexpected delays. Additionally, crews that are on-call may need to be switched out or rescheduled due to their availability or rest cycles, creating additional backlogs. Finally, when there is limited airspace due to another scheduled flight, the current flight may need to be momentarily delayed.
