What are the reasons why are flights delayed?

Last updated on April 24, 2023

Flights can be delayed for numerous reasons including bad weather, air traffic control backlogs, aircraft maintenance issues, or staff shortages. In some cases, delays can occur simply because aircraft need to refuel for their next flight. Delays resulting from weather are unavoidable; when bad weather occurs, such as snow, wind, rain, or thunderstorms, pilots cannot take off or land safely and therefore must wait. Traffic control backlogs can also cause delays, as these create a domino effect and can lead to a build-up of traffic. Aircraft maintenance issues, such as electrical problems or mechanical difficulties, can also lead to flight delays. Lastly, if airline staff are unavailable, crew shortages can lead to delays as there isn't anyone to complete necessary tasks.
