Why are flights cancelled?

Last updated on April 25, 2023

Flights may be cancelled for a variety of reasons, ranging from severe weather, labor strikes, mechanical issues, or even airport congestion. The airline may also cancel a flight if the aircraft cannot sufficiently accommodate the number of booked passengers. Airlines may also cancel flights due to acts of terror, or due to public health emergencies such as the recent Coronavirus pandemic. Ultimately, the reason for a flight cancellation is to ensure passenger safety and meet the standards set forth by aviation authorities.
