What weather causes flight cancellations?

Last updated on April 25, 2023

Flight cancellations are typically caused by extreme weather conditions. Severe storms such as thunderstorms, hail, tornados, and hurricanes can all cause flights to be cancelled. Heavy snow and ice buildup on the runway can also make takeoffs and landings unsafe. High winds, such as those produced by severe thunderstorms, can cause aircraft instability and increase risks of accidents. Finally, extremely low visibility due to fog or smoke can also cause flight cancellations.
