Sofia the First was cancelled after three seasons due to declining viewership and Disney's continual rotation of programming. The show had initially been produced as part of a programming block aimed at preschoolers, but was eventually outshined by newer entries, such as Elena of Avalor. Ratings had been steadily declining since its premiere, and Disney elected to end the series in 2018.
