- How much wind cancels flights?
Wind speed is one of the most important factors that must be taken into consideration when determining if a flight should be canceled. Generally, if winds are too strong, aircraft need more runway to take off, meaning that runway length and obstacles may prevent a safe takeoff. Wind gusts of 25 knots, equivalent to 28mph, can cause flight disruptions and, typically, if winds reach 33 knots or higher, flights will be canceled, although this varies by airport.
