- What Wind Will Cancel Flights?
Wind speed and direction can greatly affect the safety of a flight. Strong, gusty crosswinds at or near the airport, which can take a plane off course or make landing difficult, may cause flights to be canceled, as will excessive wind shear (a rapid and unexpected change in wind speed and direction). High winds can cause turbulence, which can be dangerous for aircraft, and could also lead to flight cancellations.
