Why do flights get cancelled?

Last updated on April 25, 2023

Flights get cancelled when the weather is bad, when there is an air traffic control issue, or when there is a mechanical issue. Cancellations often result from bad weather such as snow, extreme wind, and dense fog, which may make flying too dangerous. Additionally, air traffic control at a specific airport may be over-booked or shutdown for repair, meaning that flights may be forced to cancel. Lastly, mechanical issues with an individual aircraft, such as broken parts or engine failure, may mean that a plane can’t take off.
