When are flights cancelled due to weather?

Last updated on April 25, 2023

Flights are typically cancelled due to adverse weather conditions such as high winds, heavy rain, snow, and low visibility. Thunderstorms and fog can also cause airlines to cancel flights for safety reasons. Airlines also may decide to cancel flights before weather influences them to avoid major delays. The Federal Aviation Administration also sometimes requires that flights be cancelled due to potential safety hazards.
