When do flights get cancelled due to wind?

Last updated on April 25, 2023

Flights can get cancelled due to wind when it reaches dangerous speeds around the airport or when the wind direction is opposite to the runway direction. High winds can create a safety hazard for planes by causing turbulence and significantly disrupting the aircraft’s balance and stability. Airlines may also increase the risk of a mid-air collision and make it difficult for the aircraft to take-off or land. Thus, high winds or extreme weather provide an unsafe operating environment and flight cancellations are generally avoided.
