Why do airlines cancel flights?

Last updated on April 25, 2023

Airlines can cancel flights for a variety of reasons, such as weather-related circumstances, unexpected maintenance and repairs, staffing issues, mechanical issues, and airport closure. If a flight has too few passengers to make the trip economically viable, the airline may also decide to cancel the flight. Airlines may also cancel flights ahead of time to re-route planes or reduce the number of total flights due to increased safety protocols or travel restrictions.
