Why are there so many cancelled flights?

Last updated on April 25, 2023

There are many different reasons why flights may be cancelled. The most common reasons are due to weather, mechanical issues, and air traffic control. Poor weather conditions such as high winds and low visibility can pose a safety risk to planes, so flights may be cancelled until visibility and the weather improve. Mechanical issues might arise that require aircraft maintenance before the flight to ensure safety for all passengers. Air traffic control centres regulate the number of planes in the air, so in certain circumstances flights may need to be cancelled or delayed due to the amount of planes already in the air.
