Planes 3 was ultimately cancelled due to budgetary reasons. The production costs for the movie and the uncertain international box office results led many involved with the project to decide it was not a financially viable option. This, combined with Disney's acquisition of the rights to popular characters in the Pixar films, made continuing the Planes series too risky.
